Yabby Races

Just as Derby Day is the lead up event to the Melbourne Cup, the International Yabby Races is the lead up event to the 'Melbourne Cup of the Outback', Birdsville Races. Held on the Wednesday before the Birdsville Races weekend, the race features some crusty shelled 8-legged western thoroughbreds. Windorah's usual population of around 100 people swells to over 1200 when travellers from far and wide descend on this Channel Country town. Most visitors are intent to place a bet on these prized crustaceans that have been well prepped by their 'trainers.' There's loads of other events happening in town including live music, great food and entertainment.
